Hi, Vicent. Could you please tell us some stuff about yourself?

OK, This is Vincent from the irate Doom/Goth band called NADIR. I sing in this band & also in another Spanish band called OFFENSE, but my real band in wich I put most of myself is NADIR. Apart from this, I appear live in all shows of HUMAN WASTE, a Death metal band in wich I did backing vocals on their album. They are very good friends of us. I don’t earn a living out of this stuff, so I dedicate myself to teach English at school, to children. Of course, although I would prefer to teach other abilities to many women (just showing off...)
I’ve been in the underground for more than ten years now and have experienced most of the changes metal has suffered throughout these grinding years, most of them have been not very sensible to tell the truth. I love every kind of music that can make me feel elate, angry, mystical, misanthropic, godlike...mostly Metal and Gothic stuff.
I think it’s enough about me though I could be speaking of myself for eras.

How did your musical career begin? Some members of NADIR played in the Death Metal band OBSCURE back then. Why did this band break up?

I started back in ’89 with a band called OBSCURE. We were probably the first Death Metal band to appear in our territory, and were the most important combo in this genre until some cunning guys started to appear and make profit of the trend.
We recorded and released three demos and one of them, “Curse the Course”, was and probably is still the best selling demo in the Spanish underground. We got a deal with a now extinct German label that finally broke up and we got really disappointed with the business side of everything. Started to get sick of everything, stopped rehearsing and seeing each other and finally called it a day, without even the need of talking over it. Just two of us are still together in this other project.

Why didn’t you continue to play Death Metal? How long have you been together in NADIR?

It’s not that we got sick of Death Metal at all. It just occurred that we noticed that what we did best in OBSCURE were the slower and heavier parts, more than the fastest ones. Thus, me and the bass player, Anselmo, met and decided which line to follow, in a slower and sicker direction with a little bit more of melodies in it. Anyway, I think it is the direction that OBSCURE would have followed in the end, so we’re doing what we do best. For this new stuff we incorporated a second bass player and lately a keyboard player, a guitarrist and of course a pounding drummer.
We have been together now for about five years although our guitar player has been in the band only for a year. Since the other one left.

Tell us about your first album “Fall From Grace”. How much did this release cost to you? Hasn’t there been any laber interest?

“Fall From Grace” was a rather cheap effort to record, since we did the sessions at a friend’s house studio and we didn’t need a producer as I produced it and mixed it myself with the helping hands of the studio’s owners. Apart from that, the cover design was done for free by a friend of mine. What was more expensive is the self-edition of the CD’s. We have just released 500 copies and still are waiting for some label interest to make a further edition and promotion of the album. I have received lots of formal letters from many labels so far. The big ones are into too many, and the small ones are just into what they call nowadays the most extreme side of metal, that’s Black and Brutal Death, little chance for what we do, be it original or not.

Do you usually play live? Are in your area many people into your music?

We are not a band that play every week. We don’t do many shows but we try to play as many important shows as we can. We use to play nice metal clubs, did a big festival last May and we are opening for MOONSPELL at the end of September. Another small metal festival in the beginning of October and open again for NAPALM DEATH at the end of October. Of course we would like to play live much more but it could be possible having the support of a record company and a good management that we don’t have yet. Besides, we live in an area where very few people are into extreme or weird stuff, most of them are very easy living cattle, if you get my words.

Is Barcelona a fine place to live?

I don’t live in Barcelona but I can tell you that it is probably the city in which most of the sickest and most extreme shows happen. It’s the place where all bands play and where we use to go to see the metal shows.
Apart from that, it’s a very nice place to live, in my opinion.

Do you know anything about the Hungarian scene? Do you remember the legendary Seaside zine (RIP)? They interviewed your old band around ’92 and you also were on their tape comp.?

I really don’t know much about Hungarian bands and those who ring my bell, maybe are not really Hungarian and I would commit a big mistake. I just could tell them if somebody mentions them to me but right now I can’t pretend that I know any. What I can recall is the Seaside zine because I answered that interview myself, but I think I never saw the interview published. Maybe because I wasn’t sent a copy or just can’t recall what happened that long back.

How big would you like to see NADIR get?

Believe me, I know the style we play won’t ever get to the lists. I know the way we do things is not what I could tell like commercial. So I would be happy if we got a deal with a fairly good label, a fair deal, could make proper tours with many bands I love and see when they come to my country, and tour the States, throughout Europe and everywhere. But I’m a down to Earth man and know that chances are short and time is running out. Call me pessimistic, but I loathe the baits of faith and false hopes. I know we are good enough to get it, but it is not all on us.

Last comments? Merchandise for sale?

I’m sending a big hail to all the evil bastards in Hungary, because we feel as evil as they can ever be. We have got the CD for sale for 12$ p+p incl. And a dark green T-shirt for 13$ p+p incl. That’s all for now man. Hope you enjoyed my nonsense...Glory to Evil!!!!
